About Stephen
Leader, Nova Scotia Liberal Party
On April 28th, 2007, Liberals from across Nova Scotia elected Stephen McNeil as their new Leader—beginning a process of renewal within the Nova Scotia Liberal Party.
Stephen’s work ethic, integrity and ability to listen helped guide him toward a career in public life—and were key factors in his leadership success.
In 2003, as the new MLA for Annapolis, Stephen worked tirelessly to respond to the needs of his constituents and quickly made his mark on the political landscape of Nova Scotia. In 2006, he was re-elected with a strong majority.
Stephen believes in a compassionate and inclusive Nova Scotia and has been a strong voice for seniors, rural Nova Scotians and the rights of the disabled. In 2005, he forced the government to repay $1 million to low-income seniors who were unfairly charged pharmacare premiums. He was also instrumental in passing a bill to allow persons with disabilities the dignity of managing their own care.
Stephen has served as the Caucus Whip and Liberal Critic for Agriculture; Seniors; Community Services; Tourism and Culture; and the Disabled Persons Commission. He has retained his responsibility as the Critic for Community Services and the Disabled Persons Commission.
As a young adult, Stephen chose to attend Nova Scotia Community College so that he could learn a trade and return to the Annapolis Valley to be close to his family. He owned and operated a successful small business for over 18 years.
Family has played a principal role in Stephen’s life. As the 12th of 17 children of Theresa and the late Burt McNeil, Stephen learned the importance of teamwork and compromise at a very early age. And he knows what it takes to ensure that his voice is heard!
Stephen and his wife, Andrea, currently reside in Upper Granville, Annapolis County. They are the proud parents of two teenagers, Colleen and Jeffrey.
